I don’t think our judicial system is a mess. I do, however, think that there should be more accountability imposed on lawyers and their billing practices. In particular, there should be a law that puts a cap on the total attorney fees that a counsel can bill their client on a case involving collection. I have seen attorneys abuse their power first hand, with an opposing client claiming he was owed $134,000 in legal services for the collection of a $2,900 trucking bill from me. The presiding judge reversed the lower court decision to make me pay that sum, but I was still struck by how much the client had been charged.
